Green light for events hub
, CA A A temporary events hub in Hagley Park has been given the go-ahead by the Christchurch City Council, as councillors prepare to discuss the fate of council chief executive Tony Marryatt behind closed doors.
Councillors voted unanimously to approve the events space, which is intended to help the city get back into its annual programme of events and festivals.
Banks Peninsula councillor Claudia Reid said the hub would provide a place for quake-hit residents to gather and relax.
"This is just fantastic, I am so excited.
"When you look at what's coming here, and we're going to kick it off for the children ... and their families [at Kidsfest in July]."
A staff report said the hub would provide a "central, safe and accessible" location to hold performances and festivals.
The council's inflatable dome will be used for many of the events, which will include the Christchurch Arts Festival, the Rugby World Cup and the World Buskers Festival.
The dome will also be open to community groups and artists for a $100 koha.
It will run from July 1 to next January.
The events hub was the last item on the open section of the council agenda, with the possible reappointment of Marryatt currently being discussed in a public-excluded session.
